This period in September always feels more like the start of a new year than January 1st! It’s a time for looking ahead to new beginnings, fresh opportunities and exciting challenges. A writer who is rather neglected these days, but is a favourite of mine, Arnold Bennet, said:
“The chief beauty about time
is that you cannot waste it in advance.
The next year, the next day, the next hour are lying ready for you,
as perfect, as unspoiled,
as if you had never wasted or misapplied
a single moment in all your life.
You can turn over a new leaf every hour
if you choose.”
His words express beautifully that sense of renewal and hope, as well as a sense of purpose, that we all feel as another school year begins.
As ever, we return to school celebrating the successes of our students in the summer exams. In particular, our Year 4 students did brilliantly in their Maths GCSE despite the changes to the grading system which makes it harder to get a top grade. Our Year 7 graduates also performed magnificently and almost all of them secured their places in their first choice universities. Twelve of them will be going on to medical schools, three to Cambridge and twenty to London colleges such as UCL, Imperial, LSE and King’s. We are very proud of all our graduates and wish them well in their own new adventures in life.
A very warm welcome back to all our students. Here’s wishing you a wonderful year ahead.
