My journey with the American Academy Larnaca (AAL) began in 1996, and I am proud to be a member of the graduating class of 2003. My time at the Academy was marked by a series of transformative experiences that laid the foundation for my future endeavors. Upon graduation, I fulfilled my mandatory military service for two years. This period, though challenging, instilled in me a sense of discipline and resilience that proved invaluable in the years to come. Following my service, I embarked on an academic journey to the Czech Republic, where I studied Medicine at the prestigious Charles University in Prague. This was just the beginning of my foray into the medical field. My quest for specialization in the field of Radiation Oncology led me to Germany. I had the extraordinary opportunity to work in top-tier clinics alongside visionaries in the field. Their mentorship was instrumental in shaping my approach to oncology and patient care. My academic pursuits culminated in a doctorate from the Goethe University of Frankfurt.
After years of valuable experience and extensive learning, I made the decision to return to my homeland, Cyprus. Here, I played a pivotal role in establishing the German Oncology Center in Limassol, where I currently practice as a Radiation Oncologist. The center represents a significant advancement in medical care on the island, introducing therapeutic approaches that were previously unavailable. Additionally, I serve as a Board member of the Cyprus Oncologic Society and am an active member of the European Society of Radiation Oncology, Brachytherapy Branch (GEC-ESTRO).
Since July, I have had the immense honor and responsibility of being elected as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Academy Alumni Foundation. This role is not only a significant personal achievement but also a profound opportunity to give back to the institution that played such a crucial role in shaping my life and career. As Chairman, I am tasked with leading the Foundation in its mission to enhance the educational experience at AAL, support its growth, and maintain the strong sense of community that binds all of us who have walked its halls. I look forward to working with my fellow Board Members and the entire Academy community to achieve our shared goals and uphold the proud traditions of our beloved institution.
Reflecting on my years at the American Academy Larnaca, I am flooded with fond memories. The summers spent at Weir Camp both as campers and helpers, the fierce yet friendly Shield games against the English School, and the enriching extracurricular activities remain etched in my mind. Trips to Agros with the UNICEF club, the sixth-year efforts in the Canteen to raise money, and the unforgettable trip to Greece—all these experiences forged lifelong friendships that feel more like family bonds. One particularly cherished memory is the top-class show we put on during our final year, which felt revolutionary at the time.
The American Academy Larnaca equipped me with invaluable skills and attributes that have been crucial in my adult life. The Academy’s ethos emphasised not just academic success but also the importance of resilience, adaptability, and a sense of responsibility towards society. These principles have profoundly influenced my personal and professional journey, guiding me through various challenges and opportunities. One of the most significant lessons I learned at the Academy was the value of perseverance. The competitive environment within the classroom pushed me to excel and prepared me for future challenges. The impression that “if I made it in the Academy, I can make it anywhere” has been a constant source of confidence. The AAL also fostered a strong sense of resilience. Facing setbacks and overcoming obstacles were part of the learning process. The ability to bounce back from failures and continue striving for excellence is a lesson I carry with me every day. Finally, the Academy instilled in me a strong ethos of giving back to society. The sense of community and the emphasis on social responsibility were integral parts of the Academy experience. This ethos of service has guided my professional choices, driving me to return to Cyprus and contribute to the medical field here.
To current students of AAL, my advice is to aim high but also prepare for setbacks. Embrace the wealth of knowledge available to you, and make lasting friendships. These bonds will support you throughout your life. The Academy offers a unique blend of academic rigor and extracurricular engagement that prepares you not just for a career, but for life.
